Princeton University's student newspaper, The Daily Princetonian, just came under fire for printing an op-ed joke piece about an asian applicant blaming racism for his rejection. I'd link to the article on their website if it hadn't already been replaced with a tear-jerking letter of apology. Instead, I'll just sum up all the controversial points I can remember:
And now they're holding a protest. Surprised? Don't be. This sort of bullshit happens all the time on college campuses, and I'm not just talking about worthless student demonstrations. Every single year, some student newspaper draws national media attention for printing "offensive" comments. In the past four years at CMU, we've had to deal scandals ranging from holocaust jokes to passing use of the word "nigger". Haven't you idiots learned anything by now? If you want to say something controversial, GET A WEBSITE.
When you work for your campus newspaper, you're not dealing with a free press. You don't have the right to say whatever you want, because it's not your newspaper. When you're granted power by both the administration and the campus community, you have to play by their rules. If you're cool with that, great. There's plenty of stuff worth writing about that isn't controversial (although there's plenty of inane crap too).
If what you really want is freedom of speech, get a website. Build it from scratch. Don't care about how many people read your site, and don't bitch if nobody does. If you can't deal with that, your opinions probably weren't worth reading in the first place. Or if you're at CMU, you could just spam misc-market.
